This time of year, many students are in the midst of end of year exams. These exams mean long days and late nights spent studying, trying to retain as much information as possible to get the best results. For a lot of students, energy drinks can be a go-to when trying to cram as much study in as possible.
These energy drinks, which are high in sugars and highly-caffeinated could really be doing more damage than good. Drinks such as Red bull, Mother and V energy drinks can do wonders to assist in staying alert and offering a quick spike in energy. The effectiveness of these drinks however is short lived as concentration levels deteriorate when the sugar begins to wear off.
Most students would tend to sip on these drinks while studying which only makes matters worse. Energy drinks, which can contain more than 50g of sugar per serving- more than 12 teaspoons- are a major contributing factor to tooth decay and erosion. Sipping on them means the teeth are exposed to high levels of acid and sugar over a long period of time.
Although energy drinks may seem like a great idea to keep you staying alert, the reality is due to the huge amounts of sugar in them, the energy they give you is very immediate and will leave you feeling even worse after an hour or so. The damage they could be causing your teeth is even more worrying and is good enough reason to reach for a water bottle instead.
Other ways of ensuring high concentration levels and alertness include;
- Having a sustainable breakfast such as oats, eggs and avocado on toast, natural yogurt and fruit or breakfast greens
- Get enough sleep- by getting enough sleep, the time you are awake will be more productive than if you try to work off minimal hours sleep
- Drink plenty of water
- Exercise- be it as simple as taking a walk around the block or university to break up your study
By staying away from the energy drinks, you will be looking after your teeth and your study time will be even more productive. If you drink a lot of energy drinks and think you could have already damaged your teeth, contact us today for a check up.
