While we strongly recommend that you continue to brush your teeth twice and floss once a day, it is best to also stay vigilant with any changes in your mouth.
The fluctuations of hormones in your body can worsen any existing oral health issues you have. Pregnant women are more susceptible to gum inflammations and infections. Some also develop “pregnancy gingivitis” where gums become sensitive, swell and may bleed.
Brushing & Morning Sickness
For those that suffer from morning sickness, there are some tips that you should remember. While brushing your teeth straight away after a bout of nausea may be your first reaction, this actually can strip away the enamel and cause damage to your teeth.
The Australian Dental Association recommends the following after a bout of morning sickness:
- Wait an hour before brushing
- Rinse your mouth with water to remove any remaining acid
- Chew sugar-free gum which stimulates saliva flow
- Eat acid-neutralising foods like hard cheese
Food Cravings & Your Teeth
If you are craving unusual foods (or combinations of foods!), the health of your teeth probably isn’t top of mind when you are looking in the fridge or pantry! However, try to choose healthier foods when snacking, that contributes to a healthier oral environment. Aim for less processed sugary snacks and more fresh fruit.
Is it Safe to Visit the Dentist While Pregnant?
The short answer is yes! It is recommended that you regularly visit the dentist, and this should not change while pregnant.
